More than 10.8 million people in Pakistan were still living without access to electricity in 2024, according to the Tracking SDG 7: The Energy Progress Report 2026, jointly published by the World Bank, International Energy Agency (IEA), International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), World Health Organization (WHO), and the United Nations.
Although Pakistan has made considerable progress in expanding electricity access over the past decade, the report highlights that millions of people—particularly in underserved and remote communities—continue to face challenges in accessing reliable power.
Progress and Remaining Challenges
The report recognizes that Pakistan has significantly improved electrification through grid expansion, rural electrification projects, and infrastructure development.
However, several challenges remain, including:
- Limited electricity access in remote areas
- Affordability of electricity connections and monthly bills
- Reliability of power supply
- Growing energy demand
- Need for sustainable energy solutions
According to the report, electricity access is essential for improving education, healthcare, employment opportunities, communication, and economic development.
Importance of Reliable Energy
Access to affordable and reliable electricity directly impacts quality of life by supporting:
- Schools and educational institutions
- Hospitals and healthcare facilities
- Small businesses and industries
- Digital connectivity
- Economic productivity
The report also highlights the growing importance of renewable energy solutions, including off-grid solar systems and mini-grids, in reaching communities where extending the national grid may be difficult.
Moving Toward SDG 7
Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7) aims to ensure universal access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy by 2030.
Experts believe that accelerating investment in clean energy, strengthening infrastructure, improving affordability, and promoting renewable technologies will be essential for Pakistan to achieve this target.
Final Thoughts
While Pakistan has made impressive gains in expanding electricity access, the Energy Progress Report 2026 shows that significant work remains to ensure every citizen benefits from reliable and affordable energy. Continued investment, policy reforms, and innovation will play a critical role in achieving universal energy access and supporting long-term national development.
