Pakistan's Population Could Reach 400 Million by 2040, Health Minister Warns

Pakistan's population could rise to 400 million by 2040 if current growth trends continue, according to Minister of State for Health Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad Bharath.

Speaking at a ceremony in Islamabad, the minister highlighted the need for greater public awareness, responsible family planning, and stronger maternal and child healthcare services to address the country's growing demographic challenges.

Growing Population Presents Long-Term Challenges

Rapid population growth can have wide-ranging effects on a country's healthcare system, education sector, housing, employment opportunities, infrastructure, food security, and public services.

Dr. Bharath stressed that addressing these challenges requires coordinated planning and increased awareness among citizens.

National Council Established

The minister said the government has established a National Council under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to help formulate policies and coordinate efforts aimed at managing population-related issues.

According to the minister, the council will focus on strengthening long-term strategies that support sustainable national development.

Focus on Maternal and Child Health

Dr. Bharath emphasized that improving maternal healthcare, child healthcare, and reproductive health services remains a national priority.

He also highlighted the importance of increasing access to modern contraceptive methods and healthcare services to help families make informed decisions.

Responsible Family Planning

During his address, the minister encouraged parents to carefully consider their ability to provide:

  • Proper nutrition
  • Quality education
  • Healthcare services
  • Routine immunisation
  • A safe and secure upbringing

He noted that responsible family planning can contribute to healthier families and better long-term social and economic outcomes.

Why Population Planning Matters

Experts generally note that sustainable population management supports:

  • Improved healthcare delivery
  • Better educational outcomes
  • Stronger economic planning
  • Reduced pressure on public infrastructure
  • Enhanced quality of life
  • More effective resource management

Balancing population growth with national development remains an important objective for policymakers.

Conclusion

The minister's remarks highlight the growing importance of long-term planning as Pakistan prepares for future demographic changes.

Strengthening healthcare services, expanding public awareness, and improving access to family planning resources are expected to remain central components of national population policy in the years ahead.
