Pakistan's freelancing industry has reached a new milestone, with freelancers earning a record $1.76 billion in foreign exchange during fiscal year 2025–26, according to data released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP).
The figure represents a 78% increase from $984 million recorded in FY2024–25, highlighting the rapid growth of Pakistan's digital services sector.
Strong Growth Across IT and Non-IT Sectors
The growth was driven by both IT and non-IT freelance exports.
IT Freelancers
Pakistani IT freelancers generated more than $1.16 billion during FY2025–26, compared to $779 million in the previous fiscal year.
This represents an increase of 49%, adding approximately $385 million in export earnings.
Non-IT Freelancers
Non-IT freelancers recorded even stronger growth, with export earnings rising from $205 million to $592 million.
The segment grew by 188%, contributing approximately $387 million in additional foreign exchange.
Freelancers Strengthening Pakistan's Economy
According to Pakistan Freelancers Association (PAFLA) Chairman Ibrahim Amin, freelancers are playing an increasingly important role in strengthening Pakistan's economy by:
- Bringing valuable foreign exchange into the country
- Supporting tax revenues
- Promoting digital skills
- Expanding Pakistan's global services exports
He also noted that Pakistan's freelancing industry has become one of the country's leading export sectors, surpassing several traditional industries in earnings.
Pakistan Among the World's Largest Freelancing Markets
Industry estimates suggest Pakistan is home to nearly three million full-time and part-time freelancers, making it the fourth-largest freelancing workforce globally.
The country's growing reputation in software development, graphic design, content writing, digital marketing, video editing, and other online services continues to attract international clients.
