Riyadh Air Officially Launches Pakistan Operations With First Flight to Islamabad

Riyadh Air has officially entered the Pakistani aviation market, launching its first passenger service between Riyadh and Islamabad on August 14, 2026. The arrival marks an important development in air connectivity between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia and gives passengers another direct travel option between the two countries.

The inaugural service, RX-660, arrived at Islamabad International Airport from Riyadh carrying 69 passengers. The aircraft was welcomed with a ceremonial water salute, a traditional gesture used to mark the launch of significant new airline services.

Riyadh Air Begins Pakistan Operations

The launch makes Riyadh Air one of the latest carriers to expand connectivity between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.

The airline plans to operate seven flights per week between Riyadh and Islamabad, providing a daily connection between the two capitals. The service is expected to give passengers greater flexibility when planning travel for business, family visits, employment and other purposes.

The inaugural arrival was followed by an official ceremony at Islamabad International Airport attended by senior officials, representatives of Riyadh Air and Saudi diplomatic representatives. The launch was presented as an important step toward strengthening aviation and people-to-people connections between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

Lahore Service to Follow

Riyadh Air’s expansion into Pakistan is not limited to Islamabad.

The airline is scheduled to begin Riyadh–Lahore flights from August 18, 2026, with the route planned to operate three times a week.

This will give passengers from Punjab and surrounding areas another direct option for travelling to Saudi Arabia without having to connect through another Pakistani or regional airport.

Both Islamabad and Lahore services are planned to be operated using Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. The aircraft are configured with four cabin categories, including Business Elite, Business, Premium Economy and Economy.

What the New Routes Mean for Pakistani Travellers

The launch could be particularly significant for Pakistan’s large community of workers and families with links to Saudi Arabia.

Direct flights can make international travel more convenient by reducing the need for connecting flights and potentially providing greater flexibility in travel planning.

The new services may benefit several categories of passengers, including:

  • Pakistani workers travelling to Saudi Arabia
  • Families visiting relatives
  • Business travellers
  • Tourists
  • Students and professionals
  • Passengers travelling for religious purposes
  • Saudi residents travelling to Pakistan

The additional capacity also increases competition in the Pakistan–Saudi Arabia aviation market, potentially giving travellers more choices when comparing schedules, fares and cabin options.

A Boost for Pakistan–Saudi Arabia Connectivity

Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have extensive economic, cultural and people-to-people ties. Air connectivity plays an important role in supporting these relationships by making movement between the two countries easier.

Riyadh Air's entry into the Pakistani market also forms part of the airline's wider international network expansion. The carrier has been adding destinations across Asia and positioning Riyadh as an increasingly important international aviation hub.

The airline's Pakistan routes are expected to provide passengers with direct access to Riyadh while also offering potential onward connectivity through the Saudi capital to other destinations.

Why Islamabad and Lahore Matter

Islamabad and Lahore are two of Pakistan's major passenger markets.

Islamabad serves the federal capital region and northern Pakistan, while Lahore is a major commercial, educational and population centre in Punjab.

By establishing services to both cities, Riyadh Air can access two important passenger markets rather than relying on a single Pakistani destination.

The daily Islamabad service provides greater schedule flexibility, while the three-times-weekly Lahore service adds another direct connection for travellers from Punjab.

A New Chapter for Pakistan's Aviation Market

The arrival of Riyadh Air represents more than the launch of another international route. It reflects the continuing expansion of aviation links between Pakistan and the Gulf region.

For passengers, the key benefit is increased choice. Travellers can compare airlines based on fares, schedules, baggage policies, cabin classes and overall service before choosing the option that best meets their needs.

As Riyadh Air continues expanding its international network, Pakistan could become an increasingly important market within the airline's broader strategy.

Conclusion

Riyadh Air's first flight to Islamabad on August 14 marks a significant milestone in Pakistan–Saudi Arabia air connectivity. With daily Riyadh–Islamabad services and three weekly Riyadh–Lahore flights scheduled from August 18, passengers will have additional direct travel options between the two countries.

The new services could support travel for Pakistani workers, families, business travellers and pilgrims while strengthening wider economic and people-to-people connections between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
