Rising Milk and Meat Prices Increase Pressure on Household Budgets in Pakistan

The rising cost of essential food items has become a major concern for consumers across Pakistan as milk, yogurt, and meat prices continue to increase in open markets.

According to reports, milk is being sold between Rs. 220 and Rs. 250 per litre in several areas, significantly higher than the officially notified price of Rs. 170 per litre. Similarly, yogurt prices have increased to approximately Rs. 260–270 per kilogram, while quality mutton has reportedly reached prices of up to Rs. 3,500 per kilogram.

Growing Gap Between Official and Market Prices

Consumers have expressed concerns over the widening difference between government-set rates and actual market prices. Many residents believe that weak enforcement and inadequate monitoring have contributed to the continued rise in prices.

Why It Matters

The increase in food prices has several wider effects:

  • Higher household expenses
  • Increased pressure on middle and low-income families
  • Growing concerns regarding inflation and affordability
  • Demand for stronger market monitoring and price control

The Larger Economic Challenge

Food inflation remains one of the biggest challenges for households, as rising costs of daily necessities reduce purchasing power and affect overall living standards.

Experts emphasize that effective price regulation, market transparency, and improved enforcement mechanisms are important to address overpricing and protect consumers.
