Over 4,000 Arrested in Lahore Anti-Kite Flying Operations This Year

Authorities in Lahore have launched a large-scale crackdown against illegal kite flying activities, leading to the arrest of more than 4,000 individuals during 2026. The operation is part of ongoing efforts by Punjab Police to reduce accidents and protect citizens from hazardous kite strings.

Kite flying, traditionally linked with Basant celebrations, has remained controversial in Pakistan due to the dangers caused by sharp metal and chemical-coated strings. In previous years, several people lost their lives or suffered severe injuries, especially motorcyclists and children.

According to reports, police teams conducted raids in multiple areas, recovering thousands of kites, reels, and banned strings. Authorities stated that strict monitoring is being carried out to prevent illegal sales and rooftop kite flying activities.

Officials emphasized that public safety remains the top priority and warned that anyone involved in manufacturing, selling, or flying banned kites will face legal action. Special surveillance and enforcement measures have also been introduced in several parts of the city.

While Basant is considered an important cultural festival in Punjab, authorities continue to stress the importance of safe celebrations without risking human lives. The crackdown reflects the government’s commitment to enforcing safety laws and preventing tragic incidents linked to dangerous kite strings.
