PM Shehbaz Sharif Announces Major Development Projects for Balochistan

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has unveiled a series of major development initiatives for Balochistan, aimed at improving infrastructure, supporting agriculture, and accelerating economic growth across the province.

Among the most significant announcements is a Rs. 300 billion project to upgrade the N-25 Karachi–Chaman Highway into a modern dual carriageway, alongside a Rs. 75 billion programme to convert thousands of agricultural tube wells to solar power.

Rs. 300 Billion Upgrade for N-25 Highway

The government plans to transform the N-25 Karachi–Chaman Highway into a dual carriageway to improve transport efficiency and road safety.

The project is expected to:

  • Improve connectivity between Karachi, Quetta, and Chaman
  • Enhance road safety for commuters and freight transport
  • Facilitate domestic and cross-border trade
  • Support economic activity across Balochistan

The N-25 is considered one of Pakistan's key transport corridors, linking the country's southern ports with western regions.

Solarisation of Agricultural Tube Wells

To support farmers and encourage sustainable agriculture, the government has also announced a Rs. 75 billion initiative to convert 27,000 agricultural tube wells to solar energy.

The programme aims to:

  • Reduce farmers' dependence on conventional energy sources
  • Lower irrigation costs
  • Promote renewable energy in agriculture
  • Improve long-term sustainability in the farming sector

Investment in Public Services

In addition to infrastructure and agriculture, the prime minister highlighted continued investment in:

  • Education
  • Water resource management
  • Public services
  • Regional development

Officials say these initiatives are intended to improve living standards and expand economic opportunities throughout Balochistan.

Supporting Long-Term Economic Growth

Large-scale infrastructure and energy projects are viewed as important drivers of regional development. Improved roads can facilitate trade and investment, while renewable energy initiatives may help reduce operating costs for farmers and contribute to environmental sustainability.

If implemented successfully, the announced projects could strengthen connectivity, boost economic activity, and support long-term development across the province.
